Jones"; inscription in pencil on verso of title page: "Mr Christy ag[en]t for the Colonization Society gave me this -- I have read it with very great pleasure -- Colonization to Africa is without doubt the only + true instrument in the hands of God to benefit + elevate the col. people of this + all other countries[.] I say thus to all colored go to Africa -- thats [sic] the place for you[.] Jan[uar]y 1852, John D Jones" (David Christy [1802-1868] was a geologist, writer, and agent for the American Colonization Society in Ohio; this may be the John Jones [1816-1879] who was a successful Chicago businessman and one of the most prominent Black men in 19th-century Chicago, or one John D. Jones of Chicago who was active in the National Council of the Colored People [perhaps the same person], or one John D. Jones [1797-1878], a Cincinnati businessman); inscription (19th-century?) in red ink on upper wrapper: "34388"; stamp in black ink (20th-century) on upper wrapper: "Historical & Philosophical Society of Ohio"; inscription in pencil at head of page [3]: "B62045 : 10-26-64 : int. dev."
